gZhungwa dialect belongs to Shar Tibetan, spoken in Yuwa village, Jiuzhaigou
County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan. Shar Tibetan dialects
are also spoken in Songpan County and the eastern area of Ruoergai County. This
article treats phonetic and dialectal characteristics of gZhungwa dialect, which has
following particularities: the register distinction based on the two different phonation
types; special phonemes such as /ɮ, ɜ/; combinations of an initial and its preaspiration
which do not match in voicedness; and the simplified vowel correspondence with
Written Tibetan forms. At the end of this article, a wordlist (ca. 1400 words) of
gZhungwa Tibetan is provided.
