Abstract
Ḥāfiẓ, a renowned 14th-century Persian poet, is revered and sanctified by Persian speakers worldwide. This paper delves into his lyric (ghazal) 342 (Qazvīnī-Ghanī version), one of his nearly 500 lyrics. This particular ghazal lends itself to mystical interpretation, given the poet's self-reference as "a bird in the sacred garden." The primary objective of this paper is to elucidate the meaning of the word 'Hijāb' as it appears at the onset of this lyric, principally through the lens of mystical literature penned during the Middle Ages. The secondary objective is to present a fresh Japanese translation of this lyric, achieved by providing a comprehensive understanding of the ghazal from an Islamic mysticism standpoint, assimilating the poet's literary expressions, and rendering an accurate interpretation. This process allows us to immerse fully in the poetic universe of the eminent poet, Ḥāfiẓ.
