In this study, we created teaching materials for learners of Japanese to support career development based on the experiences of MEXT-scholarship international students who graduated from medical school and obtained a doctor's license. Using the teaching materials, we held a class teaching Japanese to Chinese students aiming to obtain a Ph.D. in Japan (seven of whom majored in medicine and two in other majors), and analyzed their learning. Although the content of the teaching materials was in medicine and the medical fields, the students' learning focused on the senior international students' attitude toward research and their sense of a mission as a bridge between China and Japan, rather than on learning medicine and topics in the medical field. The students showed similar learning regardless of their major, thus indicating that the experiences of the senior international students were highly exemplary for students aiming to be researchers.

The students’ learning can be summarized by the following four points.

  1. The experience of the students’ senior encouraged the students to study in Japan.

  2. The students’ approaches to research methods and objectives expanded.

  3. The students felt a sense of a mission to act as a bridge to Japan after returning to China.

  4. The students came to think concretely how to utilize their specialty.

In conclusion, the teaching materials were considered effective as a career development support teaching materials for students in various fields.
