Approximately 1,500 Chinese (1,523 in have been selected in the order of frequency in use and are introduced to the students in the pre-undergraduate program at this center during the academic year. The number of Chinese characters introduced here exceeds that introduced in other universities by 200 to 500.
I have produced the following four teaching aids for the Chinese characters introduced in Intermediate Japanese.
1. "Intermediate Japanese" Character Workbooks I & II
The Chinese characters contained in this workbooks are selected from the text of Intermediate Japanese.
2. E (Extra Edition)
This contains the vocabulary which are presented in hiragana in the text and studied during the first term. Students are already familiar with the meaning of the vocabulary, but this is their first opportunity to study the characters.
3. S (Special Edition)
To supplement the Chinese characters selected from the text, some other commonly-used Chinese characters that do not appear in the text are introduced. It takes the from of a series of "readers," each one a complete story.
4. J (Phrasebook Series)
This is a book of phrased formed in combination of the Chines characters the students have already learned.
These teaching aids are designed to meet the needs of those students who have Chinese characters in their mother tongue as well as those who do not.
Lastly, as I did in my previous article, I analyze the students' errors and incorrect usages which have appeared in quizzes and exams to offer some hints for teaching Chinese characters at an intermediate level.
