The purpose of this paper is to describe the meaning and functions of hazu da by analyzing sentences which end in hazu da. In order to illustrate the actual usage of hazu da, sample sentences end in hazu da from the editorial section or essays of the Asahi Shinbun are studied.
Therefore P (proposition) hazu da type of sentences are devided into 4 varaiaties with special attention given to what ending of proposition precede to hazu da, which are as follows;
1) ~naru hazu da
2) ~dekiru hazu da
3) ~aru hazu da
4) ~tai hazu da
Sentences end in hazu da tend to be preceded by state or condition, which should be realized, but is not in the real world. The gap between the real state and the preferable state is emphasized by hazu da, so P hazu da is to have some functions such as sympathy, encouragement, remonstrance and blaming depending context.
