This paper introduces a new Japanese language textbook, XINGAINIAN RIYU I (NEW CONCEPT JAPANESE I), which was published in China in September of 2002, and then discusses what is required to be a good textbook.
XINGAINIAN RIYU I is characterized as follows: (1) focuses on natural, useful Japanese and presents it as dialogue; (2) controls vocabulary and grammar introduced in each lesson so that students can memorize them easily, and also makes explanations in the textbook easy for anyone to understand; (3) provides students with valuable information on Japanese culture and society in comparison with Chinese ones; (4) deals with topics familiar to students; (5) prepares for the Japanese Language Aptitude Exam. Then how XINGAINIAN RIYU I is structured is explained in detail.
What a Japanese language textbook ought to be is discussed. First, the number of vocabulary and grammatical items introduced in each lesson should be limited and Japanese in the textbook should be presented natural and up-to-date. Secondly, systematic introduction of grammatical items is required in accordance with the student's process of learning and capacity for acquisition. The third thing to be considered is to arrange the layout and content of the textbook to have students comfortably accept them. It is important to note that any type of expressions which induce stereotype, prejudice and discrimination should be avoided. Lastly, the importance of effectiveness of the textbook in the process of learning is discussed.
XINGAINIAN RIYU I has some misprints owing to technical problems of editing and printing. It should have been proofread with religious care. It is, however, noted that the significance of this textbook lies in the fact that it is edited and published without receiving any organizational funds. Most important is that this textbook is completed by the united efforts of the Japanese and Chinese people. It is hoped that this textbook will promote a friendship cross-culturally.
