In the teaching of writing Japanese as a second language, teachers have been concerned mainly about the written product, especially about grammatical accuracy. But for our students, who are supposed to write reports in Japanese after entering universty, the writing process is also important. Therefore, we have to teach them how to find ideas and put them appropriately on paper. In other words, we must teach composition writing skills.
Generally, teaching of composition has been tried at an intermediate-advanced level. However, this paper indicates that it is also possible to start teaching composition at an elementary level.
