Who are you? What are you doing? For what purpose? Such questions demand accountability, which we internalize as part of our daily lives. Jürgen Habermas argues that a sound democracy relies on open debate among citizens, making accountability central to secular democratic society. Talal Asad, a Muslim sociologist, critiques this notion, claiming that secular society oppresses certain groups― such as Muslims―by compelling them to justify their way of life.\nAccording to Asad, secular society forces religious people to translate the language that defines their lives into a secular framework. Those who cannot translate their beliefs into terms comprehensible to secular society are marginalized, excluded from social and political influence, even as society claims to treat all members equally.\nWhile Asad reveals the structural problem of this forced “translation,” he also introduces the religious self as an alternative to the secular self. This alternative self is morally autonomous and as deserving of respect as its secular counterpart. Although Asad describes this mainly as a Muslim self, contrasting it with the secular self and emphasizing its incompatibility with secularist norms, his concept has garnered attention beyond religious circles, even among secularists seeking a more inclusive society.\nTo broaden Asad’s argument, this paper compares his views with those of the Japanese scholar Susumu Shimazono. Shimazono suggests that even secular individuals (in his case, primarily nonreligious Japanese) struggle to embody the modern self that secular society demands. Secular people, too, are often unable to fully explain themselves, left stammering.
