| 内容記述 | Quilombos, particularly Palmares and its leader, Zumbi, play a very important role in Afro- Brazilian culture as a symbol of resistance and struggle. This paper examines the significance of the Quilombo, Palmares, and Zumbi for Black people and their roles in literature by analyzing Carlos de Assumpção’s poetry and Oliveira Silveira’s Poema sobre Palmares. Assumpção’s poems not only represent the anger and sorrow of black people suffering from discrimination and poverty, but also strongly protest against a society with structural racism. Simultaneously, they call on Afro-Brazilians to take pride in their culture, memory, and themselves. They also urge them to fight injustice together in quilombos; and hold hope for the return of Zumbi. In this context, Zumbi is deified as a messiah-like figure who fulfills the aspirations of the black people. Interestingly, Zumbi’s presence in Assumpção’s poetry increased after the publication of his second poetry collection, Quilombo, in the year 2000. Silveira’s representative work, Poema sobre Palmares, is an epic-like poem that portrays the Quilombo of Palmares, which resisted repeated military expeditions by the government and fought until its eventual defeat. However, it is not merely a celebration of its achievements. The poem extols the active involvement of black people in the history of Brazil’s nation-building, describes a quilombo as a free society based on African traditions and communalism, and highlights how black people continued their resistance following Palmares’ example. It asserts that the struggle against injustice continues in the modern-day quilombo, and in that sense, the poem itself is seen as a quilombo. Originating as settlements for runaway slaves, quilombos continue to this day as places that preserve the memory of ancestral suffering and struggle, carrying forward a spirit of resistance, while consciously maintaining cultural traditions rooted in Africa. They serve as sites fighting contemporary injustices and struggling for freedom and equality. Quilombos function as cultural and social hubs that foster a sense of community and solidarity as part of their identity. Zumbi and Palmares, carrying the memory of resistance against Portuguese colonial slavery, became discourses created during the rise of the Black Movement in the 1970s and the 1980s, aimed at the struggle for modern-day freedom and equality. Literature has contributed to this discourse by incorporating it as a theme in many studies. In Assumpção’s poetry, particularly because of the need to appeal to the masses, Zumbi was likely mythologized through a rhetorical strategy, leading to his increased presence in works after the second poetry collection. |
