内容記述 | The ‘entelechies’ appear in oral literature bequeathed from generation to generation. Its exploration reveals the world in which the bearers of oral literature – narrators and audiences – live. In this article, through an analysis of the early modern Cossack song ‘Hey, on the hilltop those reapers reap’, we illustrate how Ukrainians have two antithetic ‘entelechies’. At the beginning of the modern era, Ukrainians travelled between the centre of the dizzyingly developing ‘European’ world and its periphery, the ‘Wild Fields’ or ‘Loca deserta’. With two destinations in mind, they naturally enchanted with two poles of both ‘Order’ and ‘Chaos’ and challenged them. In general, they struggled to find a ‘way out’ of dead-end situations under the pressures of modernisation. The ‘Cossackised’ Ukrainians sought a ‘way out’ in the building of the new order and eventually established their own state. However, the Ukrainian people sang not of the hardships of their ancestors in state-building but of their other nature – the deviations against the order. The bearers of the song, who are represented by ‘rye-reapers’ that remain in the community, sing of the Cossacks as the ‘prodigal son’ who goes on a ‘journey’, leaving the community. The Cossacks embrace the deficiency felt by people who are becoming isolated in the new order of the modern world, and this is why they can be the people’s ‘heroes’. |
