内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 This paper describes the characteristics of short sentences using intermediate sentence patterns produced by advanced level Japanese language learners and examines the effectiveness of providing opportunities for review of intermediate sentence patterns at the advanced level.
The background of this study is as follows: (1) the ability of learners to use sentence patterns up to N2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test is important as an academic Japanese skill (Yamamoto 2005a, Yamamoto 2005b, Sato 2005), and this ability is the basis for both undergraduate studies and postgraduation activities, (2) the systematization of sentence patterns after intermediate level is still insufficient (Maeda 2007, Yamamoto 2019) and it is up to course providers or learners themselves to acquire and use information that enables them to differentiate expressions that are similar and use them appropriately in the appropriate context, although related information can be obtained from various materials, textbooks, and learning websites, and (3) most advanced students in the intermediate review class in the pre-college course have indicated that the review and application of sentence patterns was useful for improving their academic Japanese (Suzuki and Goto 2021).
In this paper, some aspects of short sentences using intermediate sentence patterns produced by advanced level learners were investigated while analyzing the level of the learners' process enabled them to produce sentences in rich and appropriate contexts, as described in Mine's (2015) developmental stage level of processing, which is based on the processability theory that predicts the level of language acquisition. Based upon analysis, it was found that (1) the sentences were rich and vivid in context including the learners' experiences and thoughts; (2) although the learners had no problems understanding and producing intermediate-level grammar patterns, they made minor errors when producing unique sentences, and (3), as processability theory describes, it was shown that while there were few errors at the clause level, with the exception of spelling and minor word confusion, some misuses were found at the sentence and compound sentence level, such as the modality and the aspect of verbs, and the categories of nouns that come before or after certain patterns.
In summary, short sentences using intermediate sentence patterns produced by advanced learners suggest the applicability of processability theory in SLA and further analysis in this area is expected. Utilizing the findings and taking advantage of technological advances, a systematic analysis based on macro-level teacher feedback will be required in the future.
