| 内容記述 | Although the importance of mother tongue education has been emphasized in various aspects in Japan (Majima 2009), how linguistic minorities utilize their mother tongue and how they value them remains largely unexplored. This study explores how graduates of mother togue programs in a public high school perceive the value of their training for their everyday lives in Japanese society. Follow-up interviews were conducted with 3 participants who were primarily linguistic minority graduates (mostly Chinese speakers). The interviews focused on domains such as “family,” “education,” “employment,” and “friendship”—areas identified by Fishman (1972) as critical factors of language practices—and the participants shared stories about their use of their mother tongue. The interview results show that the expansion of virtual spaces has enabled the participants to use their mother tongue more actively and that they are exploring opportunities to utilize their multilingual abilities (including their abilities related to their mother tongue) while maintaining a balanced relationship with mother tongue. Further, the results revealed that the participants attribute varying levels of value to their mother tongue based on their life circumstances and stages. These findings highlight the dynamic nature of linguistic values and how these values are shaped by both broader changes and personal contexts. | |||||||||||
