| 内容記述 | This paper argues that the Gajan festival in 19th century Kolkata was a cultural link between the wealthy and lower classes, and the essential elements to understand Gajan at the time—“the city,” “the wealthy,” and “Shaiva worship”—were relegated to the background during the British period. Thereby, this study highlights the biases in the perspectives of 20th century historical and anthropological studies of Gajan that focused on “origins” relating to “rural areas,” “lower classes,” and “pre-Hindu” cultures. Chapter I discusses that Gajan, in 19th century Kolkata, was a popular Shaiva worship in “public spaces,” patronized by the wealthy, and Kalighat temple was one of its centers. Chapter II, using The Observant Owl as a primary source, clarifies that the Gajan was celebrated by the annual festival’s organization dal (meaning group), patronized by Bengali wealthy dalpatis (meaning group heads), and the “barbarity” of hook-swinging in Gajan and its relationships with the dal were considered “outdated” by the modern social reform movement. However, the government hesitated to intervene in religious matters. Chapter III traces the debate over Gajan, shifting from European missionaries to wealthy Bengalis. Chapter IV shows the government’s eventual intervention in the Bengal Presidency, influenced by missionaries and wealthy Bengalis, leading to the banning of certain practices in 1865. Several wealthy Bengalis had abandoned Gajan by the time the government banned the practices. Chapter V highlights the revival of hook-swinging in Gajan among the lower classes of Bengal, following its revival in the Madras Presidency in the 1890s. At this time, some Indian elites argued that hook-swinging was a practice of “others” and was only performed by the lower classes. |
