内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to analyze the expressions to omotte ite and to omotte iru node, which are frequently observed in conversational contexts where native Japanese speakers express their thoughts or opinions. These expressions are characterized by a lack of clear logical connection to the subsequent main clause. By examining examples from the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese (BCCWJ), the I-JAS Multilingual Learners’ Corpus, and the Corpus of Spontaneous Japanese (CSJ), the study identified the following findings: First, in the case of to omotte ite, the speaker’s opinion or claim, typically conveyed through to omou, is often followed by the connective -te form, creating ambiguity due to the absence of a clear logical connection to the subsequent clause. This perceived awkwardness aligns with tendencies noted in previous studies: spoken Japanese often forms long sentences through clause chaining, and the -te form conjunction is frequently overextended to indicate a parallel relationship between clauses, without indicating a clear connection. In contrast, the difficulty associated with understanding to omotte iru node stems from the difficulty of understanding it as expressing cause or reason, which is the typical function of node. Even when interpreted as a connective form of no da, the expression like to omotte iru no de (often ending mid-sentence) seems to place the listener outside the immediate communicative frame, asserting the speaker’s thoughts or beliefs with a nuance similar to “In any case, this is what I think.” Regarding the latter usage, which could be termed an “assertive node,” it is suggested that it may be related to the concept of hireki-sei (disclosure), a feature inherent in no da. Further investigation is necessary, not only for to omotte iru node, but also for related expressions such as to omou node and to wa omowanai node. |
