| 内容記述 | This study examines the linguistic landscape of Indian-Nepalese restaurants in the Greater Tokyo area, focusing on script choices in restaurant signage amid Japan’s growing Nepalese population. Through descriptive statistics of 191 restaurant signs across five municipalities (Shinjuku, Toshima, Arakawa, Ota, and Kawasaki) and some ethnographic observations, the research challenges conventional assumptions about the relationship between ethnic population concentration and heritage language visibility in public spaces. The findings reveal that 82.8% of restaurants use a combination of Roman alphabet and Japanese scripts, with only 9.1% incorporating Devanagari script, primarily concentrated in Shin-Okubo. This pattern persists despite the recent surge in Nepalese migrants and their relatively recent arrival in Japan. The study demonstrates that script choice in restaurant signage does not necessarily reflect ethnic population density or cater exclusively to coethnic customers, suggesting the emergence of new sociolinguistic norms in superdiverse urban spaces where traditional correlations between ethnic identity and language use are being reconfigured. | |||||||||||
